World Environment Day (WED) was celebrated in Vilimale’ by Save the Beach in association and with thanks to Sea Explorers for the opening of the Look & Learn Centre on the East Beach and with the Scouts Association of Maldives for the shoreline vegetation replantation.
The planting of shoreline vegetation on the South West is critical for the maintenance of the beach vulnerable to erosion. This activity was carried out in the morning while more educational activities were held in the afternoon.
Participants from 7 different schools in Male’ participated in a fun environmental quiz along with government delegates in finding answers to the questions among banners hung around the beach area. Prices were awarded to students in the winning teams. Through the quiz participants would have learned of important statistical information of the environment, climate and our habits of producing waste as well as fun facts about ocean animals.
The Look & Learn Centre which will be permanent fixture on the beach provides information on how the Maldive atoll and islands are formed, the importance of coral reefs and why they are so delicate. The Look & Learn Centre will be the first activity amongst many that will work towards furthering marine and environmental education, and possibly towards the establishment of a Marine Museum on Vilimale’ Beach.
