This year’s Saafu Ukulhas Cleanup marked the beginning of Save the Beach Ukulhas Campaign. Dustbins and signboards were placed around the beaches and in the island. Awareness programs on beach and marine ecosystems, biodiversity & conservation, as well as on waste and other selected environmental issues will be carried out through out the year on the island, through the island school and youth organisations facilitated by Save the Beach Ukulhas.
Aa. Ukulhas is one of the very few islands in Maldives that has a proper waste management system. All recyclable materials there get sent aboard for recycling, while biodegradable waste gets turned into compost, for which there is now demand. And the houses sort their waste, assisting the cycle of reuse, reduce, recycle & compost. However, a few items do get burned. But this too, we hear is about to change like their trashed situation with their beaches now!
Starting January 2014, the island of Ukulhas island will have bins on the beaches! This work is now underway…
