CLEANUP EVENT SPONSORSHIP

BEACH & REEF CLEANUP EVENT 2014

Annual beach cleanups is a big part of Save the Beach’s annual activities. It is an avenue to attract larger numbers of people and an opportunity for people to get their hands dirty and be involved personally in cleaning activities and to gain exposure and awareness in waste management issues. The purpose of hosting annual cleanup is to increase public involvement and create awareness and ownership on the issue of waste management.

Reef cleanups will also be carried out at this year’s cleanup event much the same as last year. This activity will be carried out in collaboration with dive schools, the Marine Police and Coast Guard.

New Waste Regulations

The country will start acting to the new waste regulations and therefore, many awareness campaigns designed specifically to increase awareness on these regulations will be carried out during the annual event as well as through out the year at different avenues.

Collaborations

Beach and reef cleanups will be done in collaboration with dive schools, school environment clubs, schools, colleges, NGOs, Scouts and Guides, private and government offices, Maldives Police Service and Maldives National Defense Force.

The Event

The event will start with a ceremony in the morning. Attending the ceremony and inaugurating the event will the Minister for Environment and Energy, the Mayor of the City Council and other  relevant heads of states and council members.

The attendees will then be sent in groups to the beaches, boat yard and other areas around the island. Dive teams will also be sent in groups to the reefs around Villingili and in the harbours and jetty area.

The cleaning will be complete by noon and lunch will be served along with entertainment.

There will also be a skim board show in the afternoon on the eastern beach.

The event will be covered on the media.

It will be a festive day with refreshments and music on the beach.

EVENT PUBLICITY

To create awareness on responsible waste disposal, the cleanup event will be advertised on public television and radio two weeks before the cleanup day.

Posters will be placed in all schools, colleges and university campuses in Male’ as well as throughout all government offices and in private offices. Posters will also be put up in café’s and restaurants around Male’, Villingili and Hulhumale’.  500 posters will be distributed this way. All locations will be selected spots to ensure that posters don’t end up being litter. In addition to attracting a wide audience, it is also important we are not contributing to the problem of waste by randomly littering public spaces with our event marketing materials.
